Project Group Members: Christopher Tegho, Matthew Gidaro Da Silva, Yining Yuan

Project Supervisors: Prof. Francois Bouffard, Prof.Dror Etzion (Desautels Faculty of Management)

Project Requirements:

  • A few pilot labs (the lab space arrangement will be made  between the supervising  professor and the design project team)

  • Metering devices and sensors (if funding for this design project is granted, metering devices and sensors will be purchased for the energy consumption monitoring and to be included in the  toolkit)

  • Assistance from McGill electricians (if funding for this design project is granted, assistance from McGill electricians will be needed, in order to install metering devices and sensors)

Project Description: This project aims to design an Energy Management Toolkit in research Laboratories at McGill University. According to the McGill Energy Management Plan, such a tool is essential for effective improvement of energy performance and results in 5 to 15% of energy savings. The system solution records and monitors energy consumption of research equipment at the pilot labs using meters installed at outlets / electrical rooms. A communication protocol and channel between the meters and the data storage system is to be developed. Consumption data is stored and data analysis is performed with an understanding based on the survey of researchers’ equipment usage patterns. The system will provide analytical aids to help users understand the data and use that understanding to effectively reduce energy consumption in their lab. The final toolkit will be a product after validation with the pilot labs, and will include metering devices and sensors, a software package and a user manual.

To further illustrate the expected outcome of this project; Figure 1 is a preliminary flowchart of Energy Consumption Data Management.
